Matt Freire is a Baltimore-based filmmaker and documentary photographer focused on storytelling, memory, and how people navigate complex systems. He currently works as a mentor and educator at Wide Angle Youth Media, supporting young creatives as they develop practical and ethical approaches to film, photography, and digital media.

Before entering community media, Matt spent 12 years as a U.S. Army Combat Camera Operator, documenting military operations across the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. His work ranged from frontline combat to training missions and everyday military life, shaping a documentary practice grounded in discipline, responsibility, and long-form observation.

Matt studied photojournalism at Syracuse University and multimedia production at the Defense Information School (DINFOS). Today, he brings those experiences into his creative work—using clarity, restraint, and visual storytelling as practical tools for documenting people and systems over time.

Alongside his visual work, Matt maintains Linden Analog Library, a writing project focused on reading, listening, and sustained attention as tools for thinking and making. The library functions as a working reference, used to test ideas, trace influence, and document how long-form engagement informs both teaching and documentary practice.
